The Black Soldier Fly: a source of antimicrobial biomolecules and sustainable nutrients for our planet

The bioconverter insect Hermetia illucens, known as the black soldier fly (BSF), represents a valid biotechnology for the sustainable production of proteins and lipids useful for satisfying the growing global demand of bioactive molecules with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties to be applied in several industrial sectors including pharmaceutical and food sectors as valid green alternatives to the common chemical additives. The production of alternative and sustainable proteins through the valorization of food waste during the bioconversion process by BSF larvae falls within the principles of circular economy, making this biotechnology sustainable at environmental, economic and social level.
