From food waste to new and sustainable nutritional sources and valuable bioactive molecules via Hermetia illucens bioconversion process.

The expected global population growth imposes the urgent need to find new nutritional sources. Scientific research has shown that insect meals represent valuable sources of alternative and environmentally sustainable nutrients for our planet. In particular, the Black Soldier Fly (BSF) has received particular attention since larvae can grow on a wide range of organic substrates and contains high-value nutrients, mainly proteins, fatty acids, vitamins and minerals as well as biologically active molecules. BSF is therefore an alternative and sustainable nutritional source and plays a key role in the food waste valorisation.
