Rules Tales from the MEDNIGHT

Mediterranean Researchers’ Night, MEDNIGHT, announces the literary competition Tales from the Mednight, on a competitive basis.

With the intention of bringing the Mediterranean scientific activity in a pleasant and entertaining way to different sectors of the population, the literary contest “Tales of Mednight” emerges. The main objective of the competition is to encourage and inculcate the scientific spirit, both to those who built our present, and to those who will soon pick up the witness of the advance of our society.

By short stories and tales, the aim is to promote the scientific spirit. It will also expose the importance of activity and method, as well as the relevance of discoveries for the progress of our society. In turn, it will be reflected that science, beyond subjects and clichés, is as fun as it is necessary.

In order to facilitate the participation and the preparation of the works, the registered participants will be provided, through the channel described in the present bases, with an on-line training on the elaboration of a story of scientific dissemination. In addition, the titles of the other project activities will serve as inspiration: Sky and Stars; Roots: Mediterranean Heritage; Mednight Gardens; Mednight machines.


1 Any person who has reached the age of majority may apply, provided that the texts comply with these rules. Failure to comply with them automatically disqualifies the participant.

2 The works must be unpublished and original, intended for all audiences, and not awarded previously in any other event. It will be excluded those writings that are copy or modification, total or partial, of another rewarded or published text. The languages in which it will be presented will be Spanish and English.

3 The topic of the stories must fulfil the following conditions: The story will be designed with the aim of disseminating science through its representation to a general public, and outside the scientific activity, which ranges from children to over ninety years. It should be in prose, although it may contain poetry as part of its content. The plot will be related to the field of science and to recognizable elements of that field such as: the scientific method; deductive thinking; discoveries; and tasks of the research activity; furthermore, it will foster to the recreation of that way of science.

Any aspect and element of science that has occurred in the Mediterranean, throughout history or in the present or in the future, may be a subject on which the story can turn.

4 An on-line training will be offered to registered participants, through the mechanism described in these terms of Reference, consisting of a lesson on the history of science, through a video session, and a story-writing workshop, also delivered through videos. 5 The texts presented will have a minimum length of 350 words, and a maximum of 1500. The originals must be written in Times New Roman font, size 12, including the title, 1.5 spacing, with a margin of 2cm on each side, without images or illustrations. The pages must be numbered.

6 The works will be presented telematically, by means of a form, the link to which can be found at the end of this point and the bases. The file with the text in PDF format should be appended, which should not include any personal data, only the title and a pseudonym.

7 The present rules will be published on June 30, and the deadline to present the works will begin the day ( ) of July and will end at 23:59 hours of August 20, 2021. Provisional lists of submitted works will be published no later than 5 days after this date.

8 The jury will be formed by María del Carmen Perea; Natalia Pérez-Galdós; Javier Ordóñez; Melli Toral; Milagrosa Martónez and Theo Anagnostopoulos, people of recognized trajectory in the scientific and literary field. The jury may have, in addition to the power to make the judgment and to award the prize, the power to interpret the present rules. The jury’s decision shall not be subject to appeal, and the prize may be declared deserted. No member of the jury may participate in this competition.

9 The deliberations on the texts presented and the final vote will take place on 6 September 2021. The verdict will be announced by publication on the web, press release; and publication on social networks.

10 The prize will consist of the on-line edition of the work with the management and acquisition of ISBN; publication announcing the winning people on the MEDNIGHT website ( on social media; in addition to the representation of his work in the activities of The Mediterranean Researchers’ Night, both in Spain and in those of the entities of the other European countries integrated in MEDNIGHT. Authors will continue to possess intellectual property, and will continue to be able to use their work.

12 The present literary contest will be conditioned by the evolution of the pandemic of covid-19, and by the restrictions that the health authorities establish at all times. Any changes to the present terms of reference will be made public through the information channels indicated above.

13 Protection of personal data: The authority responsible for the processing of personal data is El Museo Didáctico e Interactivo de Ciencias de la Vega Baja del Segura (MUDIC), with address on the road to Beniel, kilometer 3.2. Postal code 03312 of Orihuela. The purpose of the treatment is the management of the prizes.

14 MUDIC and MEDNIGHT reserve the right, free of any remuneration whatsoever in favour of the authors, to use the winning works for events and educational activities of science within the Mediterranean Researchers Night project. Each author will be mentioned, and used under a Creative Commons (CC) license. Mednight is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to disseminate Mediterranean scientific activity.

15 Participation in this competition implies full acceptance of the general and particular rules governing this contest. In case of doubt about its interpretation, each jury will decide what it considers to be the fairest in agreement with the organization.
