We celebrated International Day of Women and Girls in Science with 50 junior secondary school 3 students on 11th February 2025 at government girls secondary school Zaria, Kaduna state, Nigeria. The girls are between the ages of 13-14 years.

We targeted them because they are going to write junior secondary school certificate exams that will qualify them to choose science or art in the senior secondary school. MCAA member Dr Muhammad Aminu Idris delivered a lecture focused on the achievement of women in science and the need for more women in STEM. At the start, he asked them ”who wants to study science among them? – only 21 wanted to study science. But after the lecture, when he repeated the same question 41 of them said they wanted to study science. Some of their teachers and members of the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria ABUTH/ABU Zaria chapter were in attendance.

We shared Mathematical sets and refreshments with all the students to encourage them to study science and mathematics.
