September 27, 2024 – The Mediterranean’s most anticipated celebration of science and culture, MEDNIGHT—The Mediterranean Researchers’ Night, is set to take place on September 27th, 2024. This international event will bring together eight Mediterranean countries—Spain, Italy, Greece, Cyprus, Tunisia, Turkey, Bosnia, and France—for a night dedicated to scientific discovery, cultural exchange, and public engagement. MEDNIGHT highlights the importance of science in everyday life by creating spaces where researchers and the public can meet, exchange ideas, and explore the wonders of innovation and knowledge.

A Mediterranean-Wide Celebration
On September 27th, cities across the Mediterranean will come alive with a variety of activities designed to bring science closer to the public. Participants can expect to explore marine biodiversity through hands-on experiments, delve into the future of clean energy, and engage with researchers in interactive science games. Streets will be transformed into vibrant festivals of discovery, offering live science demonstrations, experiments, and exhibits.

Workshops will cover topics ranging from artificial intelligence and robotics to environmental sustainability, while public science lectures will take place in universities, hospitals, and cultural landmarks. Visitors will have the opportunity to engage in activities such as treasure hunts, guided tours of research facilities, and health-focused exhibits showcasing the latest medical breakthroughs. Throughout the event, participants of all ages will be encouraged to interact with cutting-edge research and learn about its real-world applications.

Highlighting Women in Science
MEDNIGHT 2024 places a special emphasis on making the contributions of women researchers more visible. It recognizes the vital role women have played in scientific progress and strives to inspire future generations of female scientists through its outreach activities. This emphasis on gender equality aligns with the global push for greater inclusion and representation of women in the STEM fields.

The MEDNIGHT Team
The MEDNIGHT team consists of organizations from across the Mediterranean, including Genopolys, the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Toulouse (CHUT), Marie Curie Alumni Association (MCAA), SciCo in Greece and Cyprus, the Monastir Science Palace, the European Women Rectors Association, Kadir Has University in Turkey, CIEMAT, Museo Didáctico Interactivo de Ciencias (MUDIC), El Caleidoscopio, and others. Coordination is led by the University of Messina in Italy. MEDNIGHT is funded under the European Researchers’ Night initiative, a pan-European event promoted by the European Union to bring science and society closer and heighten young people’s interest in science. The European Researchers’ Night takes place in 23 countries and more than 400 cities all over Europe and beyond simultaneously.
