Platforms, especially social networks, generate much of their revenue by selling profiled personal data to advertisers. These advertisers are “targeted” based on the users’ tastes, behaviors, and ages, thanks to the use of analytical and predictive algorithms.

This is possible because users often casually give up their data by accepting so-called profiling cookies. Few are willing to deny consent to profiling if it means they can’t access a particular good or service.
