CIEMAT, MUDIC and El Caleidoscopio, partners of the MEDNIGHT consortium made up of entities from 8 Mediterranean countries, present the exhibition ‘The Marie Curie of the Mediterranean’ next Friday 6 September at 12h at Casa Mediterráneo in Alicante. The opening of the exhibition will take place simultaneously in Alicante (Spain), Milan and Messina (Italy), Monastir (Tunisia), Istanbul (Turkey), Nicosia (Cyprus) and Cazin (Bosnia) on 6 September, and in Xanti and Athens (Greece) on 8 September.
The opening ceremony will be attended by the Director of CIEMAT Yolanda Benito, the Director of Casa Mediterráneo Andrés Perelló and the Vice-President of the Marie Curie Alumni Association Joaquín Capablo. ‘
The Marie Curie of the Mediterranean’ celebrates the lives and achievements of women scientists and researchers from the Mediterranean region who have received the prestigious Marie Curie Fellowships from the European Union and/or have contributed to them through their work. The exhibition is a collection of 29 panels offering an intimate insight into each of them. Each panel includes a biography ranging from their childhood and motivations to their university studies and professional achievements. These diverse backgrounds reflect the richness of the Mediterranean region. It also highlights the impact of Marie Curie fellowships on their careers and provides an insight into their hobbies and family life.
The Marie Curies of the Mediterranean’, which has been translated into nine languages and will be exhibited in several countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas, represents women scientists and researchers from 22 countries, 19 of which are Mediterranean. This global reach underlines the shared values and aspirations of the scientific community. Its main objectives are to inspire younger generations, to highlight the cultural richness and scientific talent of the Mediterranean region, and to increase the visibility of women in science and research
The opening of the exhibition, which will be open until 27 September, will be followed by a debate on the role of Mediterranean women in science. The debate will be moderated by Jesús Puerta from CIEMAT and will include the participation of Silvia Rueda, Director of the Women and Science Unit of the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, Maria del Carmen Perea Director of MUDIC and Marta Vázquez from the Marie Curie Alumni Association and AgroParisTech, who is one of the researchers featured in the exhibition. There will also be a scientific theatre performance where a fragment of the play ‘5 fires’, which reflects on the role of women in the world, and within this, in science, will be presented.
MEDNIGHT invites citizens to discover and celebrate the stories of these extraordinary women by visiting the exhibition designed by El Caleidoscopio and the Marie Curie Alumni Association, partners of the MEDNIGHT consortium and funded by the European Union’s MSCA programme in the context of the European Research Night, a pan-European event promoted by the European Union to bring science closer to society and increase young people’s interest in science. European Research Night is held simultaneously in 23 countries and more than 400 cities across Europe and beyond.
