The researcher specialized in viral genomes, Jaime Buigues, returned to his old high school in Jávea this Thursday, 23 November. The IES Antoni Llidó hosted two talks for 1st and 2nd year Baccalaureate students entitled “The role of bioinformatics in preventing the next pandemic”.

During these two sessions, Jaime was able to convey to the students some details of the research he is working on, which aims to report all those viruses that may be of interest due to their zoonotic potential and that circulate in bats and small terrestrial mammals in Spain. The laboratory where he works is specialised in the experimental evolution of viruses, and right now he is very focused on the study of the route of entry of potentially zoonotic viruses into cells. The researcher was able to show them the interaction between disciplines such as computer science, data analysis and biology and context. Without a doubt, this experience will have been enriching for the students and will have shown them some of the possibilities that a research career offers.
