Ocean acidification: an emerging threat, devastating impacts, and strategies to protect “our” sea
Ocean acidification is a process fueled by industrial development and the massive use of fossil fuels, posing a growing threat to the oceans. Carbon dioxide, the main byproduct of combustion, dissolves into the water, lowering its pH. This process severely damages marine ecosystems, compromising coral growth and shellfish survival, disrupting the entire balance of marine life.
