Talk: The need for science communication

PhD in Medical Genetics from King’s College London, his work focuses in combating scientific illiteracy via creating large scale awareness projects and empowering educators and students through STEM education, with a particular focus in underprivileged areas. He is the General Manager of SciCo, an international non-profit organization aiming to make science simple and to promote science education. SciCo has run more than 250 high-impact international outreach activities and programs including the “Athens Science Festival, “Mind the Lab”, “Generation Next” and “Celebrity Science” amongst others. He is a National Geographic Explorer for his work in science education in remote communities.

Talk: The Importance of Eliciting Awe in Science Communication

The discussion will center on how communication, as a human activity, is fundamentally dependent on emotion and how our brain interprets information differently depending on how it makes us feel. That is essentially the cause of the current upsurge in science denial across the globe. Darío Pescador has a background in engineering and physics and has been Quo Magazine’s publisher and editor-in-chief since 2019. Quo Magazine is a Spanish popular science publication with a more than 25-year history. The author of two books on the science of human optimization, Darío has more than 20 years of expertise in science and technology communication.

Talk: Tips for speaking publicly about science

PhD in Molecular Biology and Genetics from the University of Oxford, UK and she is currently an Assistant Professor at the Department of Life and Health Sciences, University of Nicosia. In 2011, Myrtani won the international competition in Science Communication, Famelab. Myrtani has given a number of public speeches (TedxNicosia, World Science Forum, Athens Science Festival, Mediterranean Science Festival etc.). She is also a member of the Global Young Academy (GYA), an international society of young scientists, focused on Science Outreach and Science Diplomacy across the globe. She is a fan of Carl Sagan and dreams of a world inspired by the “magic of reality”: Science.

Talk: Dissemination of education: @ school with CERN

PhD in Physics of Elementary Particles, adjunct professor for the University of Messina, Team Leader of the research group of the University of Messina at the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN, Geneva – CH) for numerous experiments, has worked for years at Fermilab in Chicago (USA). She gained experience on the biological damage of heavy metals in humans as scientific coordinator of the research project “Dare to H-DREAM (Health-Development, Research, Environment, Acknowledge and Medicine)”. Scientific communicator for activities of CERN, “National School of Environmental Education”, HOC-Lab, EMFCSC and A.M.I.A. Author in various scientific publications.
