Sediments obtained from port dredging can be a natural substrate for ornamental plants and crops. Materials extracted from the seabed of harbours cannot be used for possible contamination, as required by law.

The European Union is considering changing the regulatory framework, due to recent scientific studies concluding its viability and benefits, including those led by Pilar Legua. It can replace as a substrate products that come from hundreds of kilometers .

The conference will be an example of a circular economy, in which commercial use can be made of what was once a waste product that also generates environmental problems and costs in its transport, management and storage.
