Exploring the dialects of the Mediterranean through linguistic atlases

Since their first appearance, linguistic atlases have revolutionised the 19th-century conception of languages as monolithic systems that can only be studied from a historical point of view, and instead highlight the importance of linguistic variation across space while centering the documentation and study of living languages. This interactive experiment aims to engage users (young and old) in the exploration of the peculiarities of the dialects spoken within the Mediterranean basin, with a focus on Italo-Romance dialects – through the Atlante Linguistico Italiano, the Atlante Linguistico del Mediterraneo, the Atlante Italo-svizzero – and Sicilian dialects – through the Atlante Linguistico della Sicilia.
