I eat fish… Am I eating microplastics?! Biological cell damage of microplastic pollution on living organisms

Plastic pollution is a global concern. It is widely documented that mussels, fish and marine turtles eat microplastics from the environment, and these may reach human being final consumers of seafood. But which are the biological consequences of microplastic ingestion? By interactive experiments with the set-up of a small aquarium with mussels and coloured fragments of plastics and observation under light microscope of biological samples treated with microplastics to reveal tissue damage and changes on the embryo-larval development and different metabolic pathways, we aim to involve and sensitize the general audience on microplastics pollution, besides performing recreational-didactic activities for children.
