The Mediterranean Researchers’ Night, a pan-European celebration of research, was successfully held in Xanthi on Friday, September 27, 2024, drawing a large crowd and enthusiasm for science and innovation. This year, Athena participated by organizing a variety of events and educational activities both at its facilities in Xanthi and during a pre-event in the city’s central square on the evening of Thursday, September 26. During the Thursday event, attendees of all ages had the opportunity to meet and interact with Athena’s research teams, discovering their work and learning about the activities planned for the main night.

From early afternoon on September 27, 2024, the Athena Research Center opened its doors to the public, welcoming students, families, and interested individuals eager to explore the latest advancements in fields such as computer science, artificial intelligence, and robotics. Visitors experienced firsthand the latest scientific developments and the application of new digital technologies across various sectors, including health, industry, agri-food, environment & sustainability, culture, education, and language.

The Democritus University of Thrace also participated in this special event, providing opportunities for engagement with new technological tools and student projects. Researchers and scientific staff from both Athena and Democritus University presented a wide range of activities, lectures, workshops, and competitions aimed at bridging the gap between the public and the results of scientific research, while highlighting the roles of researchers as modern role models for society, particularly for younger generations.

Visitors had the opportunity to participate in interactive workshops where they discovered how modern sensors contribute to micro-meteorological measurements and learned about sustainable agricultural practices that help reduce carbon footprints. They also engaged in robotics activities, where they could communicate with robots and set goals for their robotic experiences.

The event concluded with live music celebrating ancient Greek traditions, blending art and science, featuring the musical ensemble “The Lyristes” with Evangelia Kopsalidou and Sophia Karakouta.

The Mediterranean Researchers’ Night, supported by the European Union (Marie Curie Actions), aims to promote science and innovation, showcasing the friendly side of science and encouraging the participation of youth and women in research.   A heartfelt thank you goes to the Municipality of Xanthi, Europe Direct Eastern Macedonia-Thrace, and the Democritus University of Thrace for their support.   We also extend our gratitude to the workshop led by visual artist Chrysa Hamalidu, local sponsors, and supporters for their contributions to the event.
